About
Austin is the classroom, and two wheels are the ticket in. Austin Youth Fitness's Afternoon: Cycle the City Camp is a bike-powered adventure for kids ages 4–11 who can already ride comfortably on roads and trails. Running afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00 PM out of Pease Park, campers head out each day on group rides ranging from 4 to 9 miles, with distance and difficulty building as the week progresses. Each ride starts with a review of biking safety, rules of the road, and AYF's group-riding guidelines, then leads campers to a new destination — Butler Park playground and splash pad, West Austin Neighborhood Pool, Ramsey Park Pool, the Austin Nature and Science Center, and Martin Neighborhood Pool over the course of the week. Campers need their own all-terrain, hybrid, or mountain bike and a helmet — and if your child doesn't have a bike, woom bike rentals are available through AYF. Dress kids in athletic clothes and closed-toed shoes, and pack a swimsuit for pool and splash pad stops along the route. Pack a snack and water bottle to keep energy up, as snacks are not provided. For kids who love the outdoors, the open road, and arriving somewhere awesome under their own power, this is the summer afternoon that delivers all of it.
