About
What if your child could conduct real cancer research alongside students from some of the nation's top universities — before finishing high school? Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin offers pathway programs that give Central Texas youth genuine, hands-on exposure to health sciences careers. Their flagship youth program, the Summer Healthcare Experience in Oncology, is a competitive two-week virtual summer program for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors where selected students join a national cohort to explore cancer research through collaborative projects and a shipped lab kit complete with a microscope, micropipettes, and live fruit flies — followed by monthly in-person meetups at Dell Med throughout the school year. Priority is given to first-generation, low-income, Title I, and underrepresented students, and the program is funded by the NIH and American Cancer Society. For students in 3rd through 6th grade, the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair Future Health Leader Award recognizes health-focused science projects judged by Dell Med faculty and students. No special attire or supplies needed — just a curious mind ready to explore what a future in medicine could look like.
