About
Natyalaya is Central Texas's oldest and most celebrated classical Indian dance school — founded by Guru Smt. Vinitha Subramanian and operating for over 40 years in the Austin community, with four active branches across North Austin (9951 Anderson Mill Rd, Suite 103), Leander, Round Rock, and East Austin — a living cultural institution that has trained generations of dancers and produced some of the most artistically ambitious original dance productions in the region. The school specializes in Bharatanatyam, one of the world's most ancient and revered classical dance forms, originating in the temples and courts of South India and characterized by its precise, codified vocabulary of footwork (adavus), expressive mime (abhinaya), and devotional themes. Natyalaya's curriculum follows the traditional progression of Bharatanatyam: Adavus → Alarippu → Kauthuvam → Jathiswaram → Shabdam → Varnam → Padams → Thillana, leading ultimately to the Arangetram — the student's solo debut performance and a milestone of enormous personal and cultural significance. Classes are open to children from age 3 through adults over 50+ of any gender, with new batches starting every three to five months. Students regularly perform at venues across Texas and at events in India, and each year participate in Natyalaya's acclaimed long-form original productions. **No snacks are provided** — this is a studio arts program. Wear traditional Bharatanatyam practice attire: a salwar or churidar in dark colors, hair braided and pinned, and ghungroo (ankle bells) once assigned. Bring a water bottle.
