About

Kula Karate has been training young ninjas since 2014, built on the belief that community — "Kula" in Sanskrit — is at the heart of great martial arts training. Founded by Chief Instructor Master Wayne Key, Kula teaches a curated mix of Karate, Taekwondo, and Tai Chi designed for kids ages 4–13, with each week introducing a new martial arts skill — strikes, stances, blocks, and kicks — that builds progressively on the last, so kids develop a solid, connected foundation rather than isolated techniques. Programs include after-school karate clubs at schools and community centers across Austin (with options for Little Ninjas, All Levels, and Intermediate/Advanced), summer camps, day camps, personal training, and birthday parties. During camp, kids learn basic strikes, self-defense, and traditional karate skills mixed with games and snack breaks — and every week wraps up with a special skills day featuring board breaking, nunchucks training, or sparring. Early arrival is available for summer camps for an additional fee. Kids should wear comfortable athletic clothes that allow free movement and bring a water bottle and a snack — lunch is not provided, so full-day campers need to pack their own. A belt ranking system keeps kids motivated and goal-oriented, and weekly practice worksheets are available to reinforce skills at home between classes.
