Founded in 1990 as Austin's first and only private specialized program for children with language-based learning differences, Capitol School of Austin offers a therapeutic learning environment where kids with speech, language, and learning differences who have average to above-average learning potential can be taught the way they actually learn. The school-age program serves students from kindergarten through 5th grade in intentionally small classes of 10–12, with every student receiving an Individual Treatment Plan developed by licensed Speech-Language Pathologists and Special Education teachers — most of whom hold master's degrees — and aligned with Texas TEKS to ensure instruction maps to the same academic standards used in traditional school settings. The curriculum weaves oral language training, multi-sensory reading and mathematics, writing, spelling, social language development, and keyboarding together with a Conscious Discipline framework for social-emotional learning, and students also participate in weekly specials including art, music, P.E., library, and drama. Rather than traditional grade levels, students are placed in levels based on where they are developmentally and academically — a structure that removes the stigma of being held back while ensuring every child is taught exactly where they're ready to grow. The Summer Enrichment Camp extends this approach through a four-week program for children ages 3 through 5th grade, with camp groups led by SLPs or educators using a group therapy-based, multi-sensory approach focused on articulation, social skills, receptive and expressive language, sensory integration, and auditory processing. Neurotypical children are also welcomed in both programs as peer language models. Comfortable, school-appropriate clothing is all kids need to bring. Snacks and meals are not confirmed for the school-age or summer camp programs — parents should inquire at enrollment. For the family that has been told their child is smart but struggling, Capitol School of Austin is the place where that child finally gets to show everyone what they're capable of.
